List of Mines in North Devon and West Somerset

Un-named Smelting Site.

Site Identification Number - 183

High Bray parish, Devon

NGR SS719.366.

Immediately north-east of Sherracombe Ford. Reputed to be some iron mining on this site but there is little evidence. Predominantly an early iron smelting site dated to Late Iron Age - Early Roman period with, possibly, some medieval activity. Large accumulations of tap slag from bloomery hearth(s). Most probable source of iron ore was Roman Lode workings (part of Cornham Ford Mine, Exmoor). (Plan of site in Wilson-North 1996, p. 138)
