List of Mines in North Devon and West Somerset

Stowford Mine.

Site Identification Number - 116

North Molton parish, Devon

NGR SS713.319.

Shafts and adits around Stowford Bridge. Worked for iron 1873 to 1888 as part of the Bampfylde enlarged sett. However presence of early smelting slags on the site indicate much earlier working. Fine waterwheel pit, intended for pumping but possibly never used, stands adjacent to entrance to crosscut adit.
For brief details of iron and copper mining in this parish see Atkinson 1997, pp. 37-9 and 42-55 respectively.

Note - the authorís view of copper/gold mining development in this parish is not in agreement with that expressed by Dixon in Atkinson 1997. See Claughton Jan 1997 for areas of disagreement.
