About Naciketa Datta aka Nac

Background

I am currently employed as a desktop support consultant at the University of Exeter as part of Academic Services.

Nac Datta

I am from October 2007 part of the desktop support team providing technical assistance in the use of computers for staff. This is an interesting change from my previous role in Learning Spaces Support (formerly audio-visual) and the videoconferencing service.

I have been working at the University since March 1997 after obtaining a HND in Computer Studies (Software Engineering) and a BSc in Applied Computing at the University of Hertfordshire.

Hobbies

During whatever spare time I have mainly in the evenings I enjoy watching movies either at home or at the local cinema. I seem to spend far more than I should on DVDs at present and have pretty much every type of genre in my collection ranging from science fiction, romantic comedies, martial arts, animation, horror and of course bollywood movies. I am a big fan of Japanese animation, especially those created by Hayao Miyazaki. I recommend seeing Spirited Away if you've never seen any of his films before, everything about this stunning piece of animation is perfect.

I also enjoy listening to most types of music, though tend to prefer rock and dance. Music that is currently at the top of my playlist include music by the following bands U2, The Stereophonics, Foo Fighters, Linkin Park and Asian Dub Foundation.

I spend pretty much all my vacation time travelling to exotic places all over the planet instead of painting and decorating. I tend to visit places in Asia for some reason, though I have been known to visit places closer to home.

I'm not entirely sure why I enjoy travelling so much as it's usually pretty exhausting and stressful getting to the destination and sometimes pretty scary arriving at some place in the middle of the night. I tend to travel on my own as it makes me talk a lot more to the locals, rather than just hang out with my friends. It also gives me more of a chance to sample the local cuisine rather eating at the famous restaurant with the two yellow arches. In fact one of the main attractions on travelling abroad is the food and trying to order something when no one speaks English.

Whilst eating and drinking are a big part of going on holiday there is also the sheer wow factor of seeing something truly magnificent like the Taj Mahal which you can never really appreciate from a photograph.

I have put some of my better travel photographs online in the photo album section of this site, which are generally updated soon after returning from a destination. I also contribute to the WikiTravel site when I have a few spare moments.

During the winter months when the weather is a bit on the grim side I enjoy playing Command & Conquer or a good multiplayer session of Saturn Bomberman quite possibly one of the best versions of Bomberman available, which I am truly excellent at.
I've got myself a Nintendo DS Lite in the summer of 2006 and have recently discovered some very good games. Currently I spend a bit of time playing Mario Kart DS (Friend Code 493998-529789) which I am OK at.

(Some of my friends might well tell you otherwise, but they lie!!!)
