I graduated in Civil Engineering with First Class Honours from Imperial College, in London in 1989. Imperial was then one of the colleges of the University of London and it's right next to the Science Museum and the Natural History Museum. I then started my research under the supervision of Prof. G. W. Hunt (who has been at the University of Bath since 1995), also at Imperial College for which I was awarded a Ph.D. in 1993.

From October 1992 to September 1995, I was employed as a Research Associate in the Civil Engineering Department and then became a lecturer in civil engineering in the School of Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Exeter in October 1995.
