After a mostly empirical PhD in Liverpool focusing on the evolution of resistance to pathogens I was awarded a JSPS/Royal Society Fellowship to go to Japan. I joined the entomology department of Kyoto University and gained more experience of modelling in the theoretical biology group at Kyushu University headed by Yoh Iwasa. Having been awarded an EU STA Fellowship I remained in Kyushu for 2 years and then moved to the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Nagasaki. Here I built epidemiological models applied to Tropical Disease and carried out empirical work on mosquito vectors. In 2000 I was awarded a NERC Advanced Fellowship that I initially held in Stirling, moving to Sheffield in 2003 and Exeter in 2011.
