I have scientific interests in the mathematics of Earth, including her oceans, atmosphere, magnetic field, and her connection to Solaris. I am a member of the SIAM Activity Group on Mathematics of Planet Earth (MPE) , as well a member of the CliMathNet community in the United Kingdom. I'm also interested in consciousness, the main subject of my poetry. The following are a short list of topics that can be found on my research page:
- Wave and Mean Flow theory in theoretical fluid dynamics,
- Low frequency dynamics in the Ocean and ocean modeling, particulary the Arctic Ocean and the Antarctic Circumpolar Current,
- Numerical Analysis of highly oscillatory PDEs,
- High Performance Computing algorithms.
I grew up near the south shore of one of the Great Lakes -- Lake Erie -- and did my undergraduate work at The Ohio State University and my PhD studies at the University of Michigan in the city of Ann Arbor. My postdoc years were spent at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Sequim, Washington, Rutgers University in New Jersey, the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado, and finally at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. In between my Masterís and PhD I worked as an
engineer for 4 years at the MacDonald Douglas Corporation working on
projects such as F18 jet engines and the National Aerospace Plane.
I spent many years in Los Alamos, New Mexico, as a scientist at LANL where I was a part of the Climate Ocean and Sea Ice Modeling (COSIM) project and was a member of the Center for Nonlinear Studies's executive committee (CNLS). Because I also spent most of my career in the Computer, Computational and Statistical Sciences Division I also gained an appreciation for the challenges in High Performance computing.
In 2013, I became a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Exeter
in Devon. One of the research areas that the University of Exeter
specializes in is climate and mathematics and is also down the road from
the UK Met Office and the renowned Hadley Centre, making this part of the world a fun place to do this kind of research.
