The optical properties of molecules whether in the gas phase or in solution or at an interface, provide a unique diagnostic of the physical processes occurring in these diverse environments. Detection of very small numbers of molecules and even single molecules reveals the dynamics and events of molecular processes. We have developing Evanescent Wave Cavity Ring-down Spectroscopy (e-CRDS), to investigate molecules by direct absorption with detection levels of the order of 1 million molecules. Research in my group has now taken the basic technique and applied it to a number of research projects.
My reserach projects in the group have produced a company called EvanesCo Ltd which is currently developing field applications of the technology. Further research intersts have produced a course at Exeter University call Astrochemistry from which Wiley have now published the book.
