This lecture looks at the Middle East in the difficult years from 1920 to 1950. we examine the impact of the modernising revolutions throughout the area. We also look at Franco-British co-operation/domination in/of the region and Britain's involvement with Zionism from the Balfour declaration (pictured above). Britain and France acquired interests in the mandated territories in the postwar settlement of the Ottoman territories. Finally, we look at the impact of the Second World war on this region, when Egypt was in the front line and there was constant jockeying for position between the British, Americans and Soviets for influence over Iran, with its priceless strategic asset oil.
