Communicating Science
Class on Psychological Writing
As part of the Communicating Science workshop, I will be running
a class optimistically headed "Writing". The aim is to help you in
the techniques for writing up your research. The procedure will be
a genuine workshop, not a lecture. Please prepare for it in the following
way:
-
Read the notes on Psychological
Writing that I have placed on the web - especially the general introduction,
and the sections headed Organization
of the material and Structuring
paragraphs and sentences. You will be given printouts of these
notes at the session, so there is no need to print them out, unless you
prefer to read them that way.
-
Find the APA publications
manual in the library or the School office, and make yourself a copy
of the Proof Readers' marks (pp 279/80 of the 4th edition). Bring
this with you to the session.
-
Also bring with you to the session 3 copies of a small sample of
your own writing - around 1000 words. The Introduction section of
a project you have completed during your MSc course would be ideal.
The organization of the two sessions will be as follows.
-
Session 1. We will first go through the notes on Psychological Writing,
dealing with questions and disagreements you may have. Students will
then pass one copy of their sample of writing to a fellow-student, and
a second copy to me. We will start going through them, attempting
to improve the writing, and marking corrections using the proof-readers
marks. This will allow an opportunity for me to clarify issues about
how and what to correct.
-
Between the two sessions. Students will complete the task of trying
to improve each other's writing samples. I will work through all
the samples.
-
Session 2. We will bring back the samples of writing that we have
corrected, and give one another feedback. The original authors will
have the opportunity to query corrections that have been made, and we will
discuss the contentious points that arise. I will attempt to identify
general issues that arise from the samples. We will also discuss
the tactics of writing for publication.
