ISO/IEC JTC1/SC22/WG15 N527 ISO/IEC JTC1/SC22/WG15RIN N142 Title: RIN report to WG15 October 94 Date: 1994-11-25 Source: RIN lead rapporteur Agenda: WG15 9410 2.7.2, 1.6 Action: for consideration RIN met in Whistler, Canada 1994-10-24/25. Minutes, resolutions and action items of the meeting are available in WG15RIN N139. 2 WG15 action items were addressed: WG15 AI 9405-37: RIN reviewed the liaison statement from WG20 in N466, and offers WT1 = RIN N140 as a proposed liaison statement in response. WG15 AI 9405-22: Develop draft position on IS 10646 impact on POSIX stan- dards. An initial paper has been produced, and discussed at the Whistler RIN meeting. Based on this discussion the paper will be modified to contain the following contents: The scope of where IS 10646 (UCS) be addressed in POSIX standard, will be described. There will probably be only a few places where the specific reference to UCS will be prescribed, including pax filename representation, and unique reference to characters in charmap and related files. It is felt that UCS can be accomodated by existing specifications and also by existing implementations, provided a specific multibyte encoding of UCS be employed. The different encodings and transformation formats (UCS-2, UCS-4, UTF-1, UTF-8 and UTF-16) and levels (1, 2, 3) of UCS will be analysed for POSIX use, for the different aspects of the POSIX.0 OSE model. Taking SC22 resolutions on UCS use into account, the current analyses show that the preferred encoding for POSIX use generally will be UTF-8, which preserves ISO 646 and can be handled as a normal multibyte encoding. RIN has made an initial review of the WG20 PDTR 11017 Internationalisation framework (RIN N136), and has no comments at this point in time. RIN plans to continue reviewing the document. RIN has collected a few more POSIX locales or revisions of already col- lected locales, and the first POSIX profile, the japanese profile version 2.1 has been collected and made electronically available. A number of resolutions related to the work of WG15 was adopted: Attachment 2 Resolutions SC22/WG15 RIN October, 1994 Resolution 9410-01 - SC22/WG15 Response to SC22/WG20 Liaison Statement on Cultural Conventions SC22/WG15 RIN resolves to propose to SC22/WG15 that SC22/WG15 approve the following resolution: "SC22/WG15 Acknowledges receipt of the SC22/WG20 liaison statement on cultural conven- tions contained in WC22/WG20 N270 (SC22/WG15 N466), and Instructs its liaison to SC22/WG20 to forward SC22/WG15 WT1 (SC22/WG15 RIN N140) as a liaison statement to SC22/WG20."
