ISO/IEC JTC1/SC22/WG20 N085 Title: Extended identifiers Source: WG20 Date: 1992-04-23 Users of programming languages and environments require that related standards would allow identifiers such as variable names, functions and procedures, to contain characters beyond those in the ISO/IEC 646 repertoire. WG20 will propose extention characters, and will not otherwise discuss the existing rules for these identifiers. WG20 will propose character attributes, such as: 1 - allowable in identifiers 2 - lowercase/uppercase/no case 3 - shifted character (possibly nonexistent) The proposal for the allowable characters in identifiers will include those characters that can be used in words of natural languages, such as alphabetic characters with diacritic marks, syllabic and ideographic characters. These attributes are fixed. WG20 will describe portability aspects related to the proposed extensions and encourages discussion on its proposals and descriptions.
