However, it has not bounced back to me (more precisely to the Japanese POSIX WG's mailing list). So, I'm resending. My apologies if you receive this twice. Thanks. -- Hi all, Here is an online version of the *final* RIN 9210 Resolutions. Please note that some of the RIN resolutions were adopted as WG15 resolution with several changes based upon the WG15 plenary members' consensus, and some were taken merely as WG15 action or liaison statement. For more details, please contact formal WG15 9210 minutes+resolutions, which Mr. Martin Kirk will deliver soon (within a week, I believe) by email. Thanks, Yasushi Nakahara TOSHIBA Corp. Favorably consider requests for such facilities in early versions of 9945-1 amendments (such as P1003.1a) currently in plan. 2. Inform WG15 of its plans for synchronizing the internationalization interfaces between 9945-1 and 9945-2. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Resolution.RIN9210-2b: LIS work in terms of multibyte/wide character handling RIN requests WG15 to approve the following statement as one of its resolutions. Whereas the current ISO/IEC 9945-1 (POSIX.1) does not support any APIs for multibyte/wide character handling that are defined by ISO/IEC 9899 (C Language), and Whereas the DIS 9945-2 (POSIX.2) does specify generic character handling features based upon a character definition that "a character means a sequence of one or more bytes representing a single symbol", i.e. it's a multibyte character in general, and Whereas an amendment to ISO/IEC 9899 is scheduled in 1993, in which Multibyte character Support Extensions (MSE) are proposed to provide a set of functions for multibyte/wide character handling, aiming at improvement of worldwide portability of C programs that need generic character handling capabilities, and Whereas the CD 9945-2 Ballot Dispositions and the POSIX.2b Draft has indicated that certain extensions will be needed in conjunction with the proposed ISO C MSE and its derivatives in the POSIX environment, and an API part of which should be included in a future amendment to 9945-1, Therefore, WG15 requests that the US development body: 1. Consider the LIS and language-binding interface changes necessary to handle "real" character-oriented features (NOT traditional "char=byte" interfaces, but in a sense that "a character means a sequence of one or more bytes representing a single symbol". e.g., ISO/C MSE and so forth) for a future revision of 9945-1. 2. Inform WG15 of its plans for supporting such features in future revisions of the 9945-1 (P1003.1a, .4, .6, .8, .12, etc.), including those revisions containing the C-language interfaces currently defined in DIS 9945-2 Annex B. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Resolution.RIN9210-3: Response to WG20 Liaison Statement Whereas WG15 RIN has reviewed the liaison statement from SC22/WG20 contained in SC22/WG20 N132 which, among other things, indicates WG20's intent to continue with the use of the term "cultural elements" rather than adopting the use of the term "locale" as defined in ISO/IEC DIS 9945-2, WG15 RIN requests that WG15 issue the following liaison statement and instruct its liaison to WG20 to deliver same to WG20 in a manner that would allow WG20 to draft a response at its next meeting: SC22/WG15 has received the liaison statement of SC22/WG20 contained in SC22/WG20 N132 and appreciates the coordination represented by the contents of such liaison statement. With respect to the term "cultural elements", WG15 understands WG20's intent that the definition of such term is expected to encompass more extensive specifications than POSIX locales, as defined in ISO/IEC DIS 9945-2. To facilitate the coordination of the work of the respective working groups, WG15 requests clarification from WG20 on the following points: 1. What is the currently proposed definition of the term "cultural element"? 2. What is the perceived relation between the term "cultural element" and the term "locale" in WG20's view? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Resolution.RIN9210-4: National Profile, POSIX OSE and SGFS WG15 RIN believes that guidelines for the production of specifications which encompass the aspects currently defined by the usage of the terms "National Profiles" and "National Locales" within WG15 are essential elements in the advancement of internationalization efforts within the POSIX OSE. Further, WG15 RIN is supportive of the concept of producing type 3 technical reports which provide guidelines for the specification of "POSIX National Profiles" and "POSIX National Locales" as described in the NPs for such work as proposed by Japan and Denmark. WG15 RIN recognizes that there is no appropriate discussion within POSIX.0 and SGFS as to the use of the term "National Profiles" and how that definition relates to the current work of SGFS and the relationship of the work of SGFS to that of WG15. RIN has a strong concern that this may cause a unnecessary confusion within the SGFS OSE and the POSIX OSE work, in particular, in internationalization arena (and other cross functional arena as well). Two possible alternatives for the advancement of the needed work are: 1. Perform the necessary educational and coordination effort with SGFS through appropriate channels, with the objective of obtaining SGFS support for the work described in the NPs proposed by Japan and Denmark, and the assignment of such work to WG15 (recognizing that such educational and coordination effort may substantially delay any such guideline documents). 2. Change the terms used to describe the concept of "National Profiles" within WG15 so that the term does not cause alarm within SGFS, thereby allowing the work to proceed within WG15 (recognizing that such a change of terms would also require changes to 9945-1 and 9945-2). One possible alternative term would be "POSIX National Template", with an associated "POSIX National Locale". RIN requests further guidance from the WG15 plenary as to how to proceed with its recommendations in relation to the work proposed by the draft NPs submitted by Japan and Denmark. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Resolution.RIN9210-5: Thanks RIN thanks the chair, Keld Simonsen; secretary, Keith Hopper; and drafting committee, Ralph Barker, Patric Dempster, Yasushi Nakahara; and the host, X/Open. _______________________________________________________________________ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= EOF
