X Consortium X/Open Working Group on Internationalization From: ISO IEC JTC-1 SC22/WG15 Rapporteur Group on Internationalization (RIN) (c/o Keld Simonsen) Subj: Coordination of activities. For some time it has been obvious that there are a number of groups participating in internationalization activities. (For those not familiar with the term, "internationalization" refers to computer software interfaces designed so that the same program can successfully operate using different natural languages and cultural conventions.) ISO/IEC JTC-1 SC22/WG15 has established a formal Rapporteur Group on Internationalization (RIN). WG15 is the group charged with the international standardization of the POSIX system interface standards. This letter is being sent to the members of all the groups RIN currently knows of who may be working in the area. Often it is being sent in care of a specific indivdual who may not be the correct contact person, but who we believe will be able to forward it to the correct person. This letter requests that each recipient: * Forward a copy of this letter to the proper contact person or group. * Forward to RIN the name of the appropriate contact person for further communication. Contact Keld Simonsen keld@dkuug.dk * Identify any additional groups not mentioned above who are also working in the area and: + Inform RIN of the existence of the group + Forward a copy of this letter to that group for their consideration. It has been claimed that the number of groups working in the area reaches into the twenties. Thus, simply a catlog of all the interested parties would be useful. Interested individuals who would not acheive coordination through a group are also encouraged to identify themselves to RIN. This information will be used to seed coordination activities so that the work of internationalization can progress as rapidly as possible with minimum duplication of effort. An open mailing list on the topic of internationalization has been established at i18n@dkuug.dk. Interested parties may request membership from Keld Simonsen (keld@dkuug.dk). Some existing private mailing lists are already automatically gatewayed from this list.
