The reasons given were as follows (I have omitted all the reference attachments): "The UK considers that certain requirements contained in the FDIS text could cause significant compatibility problems with existing code complying with an earlier version of the C langauge standard. Detailed information about the UK concerns is contained in WG14N883 attached A consequence of the first issue identified in the paper is that instances could arise where a previously working program would fail at run time although the cause had been undetected at compile time. A consequence of the second issue identified could be a failure to detect occasions when one of several newly defined functions has failed. (See SC22/WG14 N883 attached.) The UK also notes the concerns of the POSIX community as expressed in the SC22/WG15 Montreal resolution (1999-07-23) and agrees that the compatibility issues should be resolved before the revised edition of ISO/IEC 9899 is published." regards Andrew ----- Andrew Josey The Open Group Base WG Chair Apex Plaza,Forbury Road, Email: a.josey@opengroup.org Reading,Berks.RG1 1AX,England Tel: +44 118 9508311 ext 2250 Fax: +44 118 9500110 OSF/1, Motif, UNIX and the "X" device are registered trademarks in the US and other countries, and IT DialTone and The Open Group are trademarks of The Open Group.
