It is a rather pretty (UK euphemism for slow) line running through Redhill, Guildford and other parts of Surrey. It is also possible to get a train from Gatwick to London, Victoria, catch a tube to Paddington then an Intercity train (passing through Reading) to Exeter, but if you're travelling with heavy luggage this is not an appealing option. Do it only if there is no alternative train at the time you arrive - and then a taxi between Victoria and Paddington might be a wise decision. When you arrive at Gatwick, head for the Rail Terminal, which is underneath the South (if memory serves me) Airline Terminal. (There's a monorail link between the North and South Airline terminals). You will see a Rail ticket office just before you go down to the platforms - you'll be able to get a return ticket to Exeter from there, assuming that you travel back from Gatwick to the US. (If you're leaving from some other airport, get a single rail ticket to Exeter).
