A fairly good discussion of how VLA's might or should be handled has popped
up in comp.lang.c under "Re: GNUC (not Re: c is dead ?)".  I reccommend it
to the attention of anyone who would like to read some fairly good analysis,
from several perspectives, of what the rules can and should be for expressions
with side-effects.
