It is a general trawl for authors and so may be freely copied to other individuals and lists. Below is a general message sent to all potential authors of the forthcoming series of NCUF User Guides. This message is aimed at potential authors in the Posix community. We would like to produce a group of 4 or more guides covering the Posix area, possibly overing Base Posix standard and general overview Shell, utilities, user portability real-time threads admin/batch services but it's really up to the Posix community itself to decide what's most wanted. A volunteer to edit the group of 4-6 guides would be especially welcome, and would have some considerable influence on the division of topics! Anyone interested please send a message to b.meek@hazel.cc.kcl.ac.uk --------------------- general message follows ------------------------------- The National Computer Users Forum (NCUF) through a Publications Subgroup have reached an agreement with NCC Blackwell on the publication of a series to be known as the NCUF User Guides with the various titles being User Guide to... [whatever]. The emphasis in this series will be on STANDARDS - the concept arose in the NCUF Standards working group - but will go wider, e.g. Security will be covered more widely than just in the context of security standards. (NCUF also has a Security WG and the Publications Subgroup is a subgroup of the two WGs.) The watchwords (or catch phrases) of the series will be BY USERS, FOR USERS and PRACTICAL GUIDES FOR PRACTICAL PEOPLE - meaning that they will not be 'management overview' type things explaining what standards etc cover, but be aimed typically at people working in user organisations on projects, and wanting guidance, on standards and issues, on how to go about building something, such as an application, or procuring something. Management guides like the existing NCC/DISC series tend to be aimed at managers arranging procurements, but unlike that series, this series is aimed at the people who will actually be using the system, who may (or should) be involved in producing the necessary technical specifications. Also unlike the DISC series, this will NOT be just a means of PROMOTING the use of standards. Another catch phrase is WARTS AND ALL i.e. DEFICIENCIES in standards will be identified and advice on workarounds etc be given. Form of publication ------------------- The idea is that guides will be about 15-20 K words, they will be self-contained, but will be published in groups, covering a particular wider area - e.g. the book version of that on security will contain about 4 uides on different aspects. HOWEVER, "demand publishing" will be used so that people can order the guides individually if they don't want the whole book. Target price of individual guides is #8-00 to #10-00, and for books #25-00, but it obviously depends on length. Authors and contracts --------------------- Authors will get royalties on individual guides and on their share of the corresponding book, the rate being the usual 10% of receipts. Contracts will be between each author and the publisher. For the book version there'll also be an editor of the whole who will be involved. I don't want to lengthen this message by elaborating the details here. As a potential author and editor it looks OK to me.
