Future Meetings WG20 accepts the invitation from the Danish national body to hold its next meeting in Copenhagen, and WG20 accepts the invitation from the Japanese national member body to hold its October meeting 1993 in Tokyo. The Future meetings are planned as follows: Date Location ================================================ 26-30 April 1993 Copenhagen, Denmark 18-22 October 1993 Tokyo, Japan Preliminary 25-29 April 1994 London, United Kingdom Contributions for distribution for the next meeting must be received by the convener no later than 22nd February 1993. Member bodies are encouraged to have delegations which are more evenly balanced with respect to gender. 33. Adjacent meeting with SC22 character ad hoc group Whereas - SC22 has created a character set ad hoc group, and - the ad hoc group and WG20 have recognised their common interests, - and the ad hoc group convener has expressed a wish to hold a meeting in conjunction with WG20 Therefore: WG20 appreciates and accepts the offer from the SC22 ad hoc group on character sets to meet in conjunction with the WG20 meeting in Copenhagen, 26-30 April 1993. WG20 recommends that the ad hoc meeting be held 23-25 April 1993 (Friday thru Sunday). In case this is too inconvenient, we recommend 21-23 April 93. WG20 recommends to the convener of the ad hoc meeting, Keith Hopper, that he invites people with in depth knowledge of ISO 10646 to give a presentation and be available for expert advice at the meeting. WG20 requests agenda time to present the framework and requirements model and other work being progressed by WG20. 34. Internationalization overview from SC22 WGs. Whereas it would be very helpful in preparation for the character set ad hoc meeting in April 93 to have information on internationalization features in programming languages, Therefore, WG20 requests the convener of the ad hoc group to acquire from each of the SC22 WG conveners to distribute before the meeting a description of how their WGs are addressing internationalization in their current work, and how they perceive the impact of internationalization on their future work. 35. Definitions in framework TR Whereas WG20 recognizes the importance of having consistent definitions thruout JTC1, therefore WG20 requests its convener to forward the definitions section the next draft of the framework and requirements model paper to JTC1/SC1, for review and comment. 36. Liaisons WG20 requests the liaisons to and from WG20 to provide written liaison reports before or at the beginning of the meeting. The reports should give a brief overview and in a separate section list the actions requested from WG20. 37. Editors of WG20 projects WG20 recommends to SC22 the approval of the following project editors: TK Sato JTC1.22.30.01 Framework for internationalization for programming languages and their environments K Simonsen JTC1.22.30.02 Functionality for the internationalization of applications. WG20 instructs its convener to forward this to SC22 for their resolution. 38. Liaison to X/Open In response to X/Open's request of having class C liaison with WG20, and whereas ISO/IEC JTC1 SC22/WG20 believes that cooperation with X/Open is very important, SC22/WG20 instructs its convener to enter formal process for establishing liaison and invite X/Open participation until such liaison is established. 39. JTC1/SC22 recommendation to JTC1 on coordination on Internationalization activities Whereas WG20 has reviewed SC22 N1237, and to respond to resolution 217 of ISO/IEC JTC1/SC22, SC22/WG20 instructs its convenor to forward WG20 N101 and with the comment to SC22 N1237 in section 4 last clause that ANSI X11 is also active in internationalization, to the chair person of SC22 as the comments of WG20. 40. NP proposal on Internationalization of the Directory Whereas, SC22/WG20 believes that the proposed New work item on ISO 9594 all parts, in WG20 N109 is tightly related with its work (internationalization of programming language and its environment), SC22/WG20 requests the convener to establish liaison to the appropriate WG when the NP is approved. 41. Revision of "framework" WD. WG20 requests TK Sato to revise the current version of the "Framework and Requirements for Internationalization" documents with the intention of producing a concise, yet comprehensive statement of the aims of internationalization insofar as it affects the computing community and the r o>le that WG20 expects to play, usable as a planning document for WG20 in accordance with resolution 23, in accordance with the structure agreed to at the Qu e'bec meeting of WG20. It further request him to forward this revisions to WG20 members no later than 30th March 1993. 42. Internationalization questionnaire WG20 requests TK Sato, Bob Barbour and Miles Ellis to produce a questionaire on cultural elements and interantionalization-related activities (as proposed in WG20 N123 and N124) and to forward this to the SC22 secretariat no later than 21st December 1992 for distribution to SC22 member bodies and other JTC1 subcommittees, and requests TK Sato to bring the responses received to the WG20 April 1993 meeting. 43. Framework TR publication WG20 requests its convener to liaise with SC22 secretariat and ISO publications office to establish the constraints, if any, on the format of the proposed "Framework" TR and its publication procedures. 44. NP on cultural elements and registry procedures. Whereas the comments from SC22 plenary on WG20 N079 should be taken into account to produce one or more new NPs on cultural elements and registry procedures, and WG20 recognizes a need for a registry of cultural elements, therefore: - WG20 instructs the convener to contact ANSI and DIN and other member bodies to clarify their position and request that comments be returned to the convener no later than 22nd February 1993. - WG20 instructs Keld Simonsen to revise the NP(s) based on member body comments in time for possible discussion at the ad hoc and discussion on the WG20 Copenhagen meeting. - WG20 instructs the convener to talk to Jim Isaak, convener of WG15, on this issue. The planned approach is to: a) standardize cultural element specification method and standardize registration procedures for cultural elements, and thereafter b) register cultural elements Until the registry is established, WG20 appreciates the informal collection of cultural elemnets by WG15 and encourages WG15 to continue this. 45. charmaps In response to WG15 resolution 190, and whereas WG20 believes that methods based on those described in N103 are adequate to ensure coded character set independent specifications of cultural elements, therefore WG20 will not currently address a standard for registration of charmaps nor will WG20 address a registry of charmaps. 46. Registration of natural language repertoires. In response to CEN liaison statement, and whereas WG20 does not see a need for the work in N111, therefore WG20 will not undertake the work. 47. Short character identifiers Whereas WG20 believes that methods based on those described in N103 are adequate to ensure coded character set independent specifications of cultural elements, WG20 instructs the proposed JTC1.22.30.02 editor (Keld Simonsen) to incorporate the methods in N103 in the NP for Cultural elements specification. 48. Default tailorable ordering specification WG20 resolves to propose to SC22 a subdivision of project JTC1.22.30.02 according to WG20 N128, to be processed by the fastest procedure, for example by SC22 letter ballot. WG20 instructs Alain La Bont e' to revise WG20 N128 and put it out to WG20 for email comments with comments due no later than 15th December 1992. WG20 instructs the convener to forward the completed NP after resolution of email comments to SC22. 49. WG15 liaison statement WG20 approves the WG15 liaison statement in WG20 N132 and instructs its liaison Keld Simonsen to forward it to WG15 together with N103. 50. Cross Language Questionnaire WG20 approves the paper WG20 N131 as its answer to the questionnaire from the SC22 ad hoc Cross Language (XL) group, and instructs its convener to forward N131 to the XL group. 51. Thanks ISO/IEC JTC1/SC22/WG20 thanks - TK Sato for producing the first WD of the Framework TR. - Dick Weaver and Keld Simonsen for chairing the Qu e'bec meeting. - Alain La Bont e' and Minist e!re des Communications du Qu e'bec for hosting the meeting, and for their hospitality and support. - Arnold Winkler, Keld Simonsen, Akio Kido for drafting the resolutions. - Antoni Drudis for taking minutes.
